Who the grant is for
Adults aged 18 to 59 whose disability prevents them from working for the required period and who meet the means test.
Eligibility checklist
- Be 18 to 59 years old.
- Be a South African citizen, permanent resident or qualifying refugee and live in South Africa.
- Undergo the required medical assessment by a state-appointed doctor.
- Meet the income and asset means test.
- Not be maintained in a state institution and not receive another social grant for yourself.
Documents to prepare
- Identity document or accepted alternative identity evidence.
- Medical records and previous reports where available.
- Proof of income, assets and marital status where required.
- Banking or payment information when requested.
Application process
- Prepare the required identity and supporting documents.
- Complete the application through the recognised SASSA application process for this grant.
- Keep the receipt or proof of application.
- Provide any additional medical, court, income or identity evidence requested for the grant.
- Wait for the application decision; permanent-grant applications can take up to about three months in many cases.
Payment and collection

Reviews
Temporary disability grants can be awarded for a defined period, while permanent disability grants may still be reviewed. A medical report used for the application has a limited validity period.
