Eligibility checklist
- The child must be legally placed in your foster care through a court order.
- You and the child must live in South Africa.
- The foster arrangement must remain valid.
- The child is generally under 18, with limited continuation rules for qualifying learners after 18.

Means test and verification
The foster child grant is not based on the caregiver means test in the same way as the other main grants; the legal foster-care placement is central.

What can make an application fail
- Age or care conditions are not met.
- Residence/status requirements are not met.
- Means-test information exceeds the applicable limit where relevant.
- Required medical or court evidence is missing where relevant.
